Welcome to the first official blog of the Maria Julia Hernandez - Journey for Justice Tour 2007!
We are a cross-county speaking tour whose main intention is to raise public awareness of the US Army's notorious School of the Americas/ WHINSEC located at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Throughout the first two weeks of November our caravan travels across the United States speaking to students, faith-based groups, and local communities about the past history and current impact that the SOA/WHINSEC continues to have on the countries and people of Central and South America. Our main presenter is the renowned social activist Carlos Mauricio, a Salvadoran torture survivor who offers his first-hand accounts of the effects that schools like the SOA have on the people of the Americas.
Our tour begins on November 3rd and will conclude at the annual protest against the School of the Americas/WHINSEC at the gates of Ft. Benning in Columbus, Georgia. Along the way we will visit the people of Los Angeles, Phoenix, El Paso, Austin, Houston, and New Orleans.
While the struggles are many, there is great hope among a bourgeoning grassroots movement to close the SOA/WHINSEC and hold accountable those responsible for their crimes against the people of the Americas. This blog will serve as an accessible, up-to-date account of the travels of the tour, bringing you stories, pictures, and information about our travels. We invite you to follow the progress of our journey, and we hope to see you in Columbus Nov. 17-18!
